UGA PRĀVA UNVEILED: A BOUTIQUE ESCAPE ON SRI LANKA’S SOUTHERN COAST
There are places that don’t just welcome travelers, but transform them. They slow your pace, awaken your senses, and remind you of the luxury of time itself. On July 15th, 2025, Sri Lanka’s acclaimed boutique hotel group, Uga, will unveil its latest masterpiece: Uga Prāva. This new retreat, perched along the unspoiled coastline of Tangalle, promises to redefine barefoot luxury on the island’s dazzling southern edge.

Uga is already synonymous with exquisite hospitality and carefully curated experiences, and with Uga Prāva, its seventh property, the brand takes another graceful step forward. At once intimate and expansive, refined yet rooted in nature, Uga Prāva is more than a hotel. It is a sanctuary, an invitation to dwell in beauty, and a celebration of Sri Lanka’s soulful coast.

A Coastal Vision Realised
Enveloped by lush gardens that cascade toward a private golden beach, Uga Prāva consists of just seven ocean-facing suites, each one designed as a seamless extension of the surrounding landscape. With minimalist lines, natural textures, and soothing oceanic hues, the interiors are an ode to quiet elegance. Sunlight pours through wide windows, balconies beckon with sea breezes, and indoor-outdoor living becomes second nature.
The name itself holds poetic resonance. Prāva, derived from the Sanskrit word pravala (coral), evokes the fragile splendour of Sri Lanka’s reefs. Just as coral embodies resilience and interconnected beauty, the property was envisioned as a place where sophistication coexists with a profound respect for nature.
“At Uga Prāva, guests are invited to slow down, pause under the swaying palms, feel the ocean’s rhythm and share unhurried time with those who matter most,” says Priyanjith Weerasooria, Uga’s Owner and Managing Director. His words capture the property’s essence: a place of renewal, reflection, and reconnection.

Suites Inspired by Sea and Sky
Uga Prāva offers three categories of thoughtfully appointed suites:
- Hermit Suites (823–9716 sq ft): Inspired by the hermit crab, these two secluded sanctuaries combine ocean views with private jacuzzis. Spacious bathrooms with double vanities and walk-in showers open onto balconies where starlit evenings unfold in tranquillity.

- Horizon Suites (737 sq ft): Elevated across three levels, these three suites live up to their name with sweeping vistas of the Indian Ocean. Super king beds, elegant décor, and indulgent bathrooms with bathtubs make them ideal for couples seeking romance at sea level.
- Coral Suites (636–741 sq ft): Designed with families in mind, these airy spaces feature a king-size bed, two single beds, and dual bathrooms, including one with a generously sized bathtub. Every detail echoes the rhythm of the reefs that inspired the resort’s name.

Gastronomy with Soul
At Uga Prāva, dining is a celebration of both land and sea. The signature restaurant and bar offer all-day dining in a breezy indoor-outdoor setting where the ocean itself feels like a guest at the table.

Menus are crafted from Sri Lanka’s freshest bounty – fruits and vegetables from fertile soil, and seafood caught that very morning. Traditional dishes are reimagined with creative flair: expect vibrant breakfasts featuring herbal kola kanda porridge, delicate coconut hoppers, and fragrant curries, alongside contemporary small plates like seafood poke bowls and Sri Lankan mezze platters.

Dinner, however, is where culinary artistry reaches new heights. A five-course tasting menu might feature mahi-mahi carpaccio with fiery pol sambol, lagoon prawn curry thermidor with string hopper biryani, and a finale of cinnamon-cardamom lava cake that seems to distil the essence of Sri Lanka’s spice-scented air.

The Art of Wellness
For those drawn to relaxation, Uga Prāva’s wellness sanctuary offers rituals inspired by ocean rhythms and local botanical traditions. Guests can surrender to a four-hand massage, revitalise with a turmeric body scrub, or restore balance through guided yoga and meditation on the beach.
Signature treatments include the Uga Spa Ritual – a 150-minute indulgence combining Balinese massage, a coral-inspired scrub, and a rejuvenating facial. Whether sought alone or shared as a couple, it is a sensorial journey designed to leave the body glowing and the spirit serene.

Beyond the Retreat
While Prāva itself could occupy guests endlessly, the surrounding region is equally captivating. Tangalle, with its calm waters and gentle climate, is one of Sri Lanka’s most alluring coastal escapes. Days here can be as active or as unhurried as one desires.
Adventurers can paddleboard at dawn, surf the pristine waves of nearby Unakuruwa, or kayak across a lotus-dappled lagoon at sunset. Wildlife lovers will marvel at lagoon safaris and snorkelling excursions that bring them face-to-face with sea turtles and kaleidoscopic marine life. For the truly fortunate, whale watching in Mirissa offers unforgettable encounters with blue whales and playful dolphins.
Cultural travellers can explore timeless fishing villages, cycle through emerald landscapes, or discover ancient temples that whisper stories of Sri Lanka’s spiritual heritage.

The Uga Journey
Prāva joins an extraordinary collection of boutique retreats across the island: from the colonial grace of Uga Riva near Colombo to the wilderness glamour of Uga Chena Huts in Yala, and from the tea-trail serenity of Uga Halloowella to the coastal charm of Uga Bay. Each property offers its own lens into Sri Lanka’s rich tapestry, yet all share a commitment to authenticity, sustainability, and heartfelt hospitality.
Looking ahead, Uga plans to expand further with an eighth property opening in Ella in 2026, cementing its position as the curator of Sri Lanka’s most enchanting stays.
