RIVERBOAT DISCOVERY CELEBRATES 75 YEARS OF BRINGING ALASKA’S HISTORY TO LIFE
This summer, one of Alaska’s most iconic attractions is marking a major milestone: Riverboat Discovery is celebrating 75 years of immersing visitors in the breathtaking landscapes and vibrant cultures of Interior Alaska.

Operated by the Binkley family, whose river navigation legacy stretches back over a century and five generations, the Riverboat Discovery remains a beloved staple for travelers seeking to experience the heart of the Last Frontier.
Since 1950, the Riverboat Discovery has offered guests a rare window into Alaska’s rich natural and cultural history aboard an authentic sternwheeler riverboat. The three-hour narrated journey winds through the Chena and Tanana Rivers, where stories of pioneering spirit, Indigenous heritage, and wilderness adventure unfold around every bend.
“We’re incredibly proud to celebrate 75 years of welcoming the world to Fairbanks,” said a representative of the Binkley family. “This isn’t just a river cruise — it’s a living story of Alaska, told from the decks of a vessel that has become part of that story itself.”
A Journey Through Time
The Riverboat Discovery experience is much more than a scenic ride. Guests enjoy a live bush pilot demonstration, witness floatplanes take off and land right beside the boat, and cruise past historic homesteads and landmarks that date back to the early days of Alaska’s frontier life.
A highlight of the voyage is a visit to Trail Breaker Kennel, once home to legendary musher and four-time Iditarod champion Susan Butcher. Here, guests see Alaskan huskies in action, learn about sled dog training, and gain insight into how these canine athletes thrive in extreme conditions. The demonstration provides a moving tribute to Butcher’s enduring legacy in the sport and the state.
Cultural Encounters at Chena Village
One of the most powerful aspects of the Riverboat Discovery tour is the stop at Chena Village, a recreated Athabascan settlement that gives visitors a hands-on look at Alaska Native traditions. Guests meet Indigenous guides who share the stories, practices, and technologies that have sustained their communities for generations — from fish smoking techniques to intricate beadwork and hide tanning.
This immersive experience deepens appreciation for the Athabascan people’s profound connection to the land and water, fostering a respectful understanding of a culture that has shaped the Interior for millennia.
A Grand Return and Authentic Souvenirs
The journey concludes at Steamboat Landing, a charming riverside hub where guests can browse an array of locally made Alaskan gifts, crafts, and souvenirs — many of them created by Indigenous artists and Fairbanks artisans.
From start to finish, the Riverboat Discovery combines scenic beauty, historical insight, and authentic cultural engagement — offering travelers of all ages a truly unforgettable adventure into the spirit of Alaska.
A Timeless Tradition in the Golden Heart City
Located in Fairbanks, also known as Alaska’s “Golden Heart City,” the Riverboat Discovery is part of a broader tradition of hospitality and exploration in this welcoming northern community. Fairbanks serves as a gateway to the Arctic, the Aurora Borealis, and Denali National Park, making it an ideal stop on any Alaska itinerary.
As the Riverboat Discovery celebrates its diamond anniversary, the Binkley family continues to honor its heritage while sharing the soul of Alaska with the world — one voyage at a time.
