On the northwestern edge of Malaysia, where rainforest tumbles towards white-sand shores and hornbills wheel above emerald canopies, Langkawi feels like a world suspended between myth and sea. Here, along the tranquil curve of the Andaman Sea, The Ritz-Carlton, Langkawi prepares to welcome the Lunar New Year with a celebration that weaves together hyper-regional cuisine, spirited libations and soulful renewal.

This is not simply a festive programme. It is a sensory journey—one that honours Chinese heritage, Peranakan traditions and the rhythms of island life, all set against a backdrop of jungle-clad cliffs and glittering water.

A Reunion Above the Sea

Few dining rooms inSoutheast Asia rival the drama of Hai Yan. Perched on stilts above giant rocks that rise from the Andaman Sea, Langkawi’s only fine-dining Chinese restaurant seems to float between ocean and sky. By night, lantern light flickers against dark timber and glass, casting a warm glow across the water below. The atmosphere is seductive yet serene—a fitting stage for reunion and ritual.

From17 to 23 February 2026, Hai Yan presents a six-courseChinese New Year Reunion Dinner that balances authenticity with modern finesse. It begins, as tradition demands, with Prosperity Yee Sang—this version elevated with abalone and salmon, its jewel-like colours inviting guests to toss for abundance and good fortune.

From there, the menu unfolds in layers of depth and indulgence. Double-Boiled Fish Maw with Morel Mushroom offers earthy richness and time-honoured technique, while Wok-Fried Wagyu Beef with Black Truffle brings contemporary luxury to the table, marrying umami intensity with delicate texture. The finale shifts towards tropical brightness: a chilled mango and avocado purée with pomelo and sago, paired with crisp Nian Gao and taro, creating a sweet interplay of tradition and island flavour.

The evening closes with Tang Yuan—soft glutinous rice balls served as a gesture of unity and harmony. It is a small but meaningful moment, echoing across families gathered at the table, the sea murmuring below.

As celebrations continue, Hai Yan will mark Chap Goh Mei on 3 March 2026 with a specially curated menu honouring the fifteenth and final night of the New Year festivities—a grand finale framed by moonlight and ocean spray.

A Peranakan Tapestry of Flavour

If Hai Yan offers refinement above the waves, Langkawi Kitchen delivers exuberance at the rainforest’s edge.

On 16 February 2026, the restaurant unveils its Peranakan Feast, a Chinese New Year’s Eve buffet inspired by the vibrant culinary traditions of the Straits-born Chinese community. Peranakan cuisine—where Chinese heritage meets Malay spices—is celebrated for its bold aromatics, intricate techniques and layers of heat and sweetness.

Guests can wander between stations brimming with festive favourites: Yee Sang glistening with colour; Ayam Pongteh slow-braised to tender perfection; Daging Masak Hitam rich with caramelised spice; Udang Masak Lemak Nenas fragrant with coconut and pineapple; and Lamb Curry Kapitan simmered in a complex spice paste. Bowls of Nyonya Laksa Lemak add creamy depth and chilli warmth, rounding out a feast that feels both ancestral and exuberantly alive.

The setting amplifies the experience. Inspired by indigenous Bornean longhouse architecture, Langkawi Kitchen offers both indoor and outdoor dining spaces, framed by panoramic views of ancient rainforest. As dusk settles and cicadas begin their chorus, the buffet becomes more than a meal—it becomes a gathering woven into the island’s living landscape.

Golden Goji offers a nod to traditional ingredients, Yuzu Prosperity delivers fragrant sharpness, and Osmanthus Fortune finishes with delicate floral sweetness. Together, they form a celebratory flight that is as photogenic as it is palate-pleasing.

Surrounded by rainforest and open sea, guests can raise a glass to vitality, movement and strength—the qualities embodied by the Year of the Horse—while the horizon burns in evening colour.

Island Joy for Young Explorers

Lunar New Year on Langkawi is not reserved for adults alone. From 16 to 22 February 2026, younger guests are invited into a world of creativity and cultural discovery at Ritz Kids.

Activities range from lunar face painting and batik sessions to Ang Pow craft workshops and Mandarin scavenger hunts. Children can try their hand at crafting lucky lanterns or enjoy playful Nian Gao fruit skewers in between a Spring Festival Cinema screening. It is a programme designed not merely to entertain, but to connect young travellers with the stories and symbolism of the season.

Against the backdrop of rainforest and sea, these small rituals become formative travel memories—moments of colour, laughter and shared celebration.
