PHILADELPHIA CELEBRATES AMERICA’S 250TH ANNIVERSARY WITH ART EXHIBITIONS AND NEW EXPERIENCES
As the United States prepares for its 250th anniversary in 2026, Philadelphia—the birthplace of American democracy—is taking center stage with a transformative lineup of exhibitions and immersive art experiences.

At the U.S. Travel Association’s IPW 2025, the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau (PHLCVB) showcased the city’s role as a premier international destination for the Semiquincentennial, spotlighting art, history, and innovation.
A Nation of Artists: A Historic Collaboration Between Two Iconic Institutions
Sasha Suda, George D. Widener Director and CEO of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA), announced the monumental exhibition A Nation of Artists, opening in April 2026. The exhibition, a joint effort between the PMA, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA), and the Middleton family, will present the most extensive collection of American art ever displayed in Philadelphia.
The dual-venue exhibition will feature more than 1,000 works across both institutions. At PAFA, the focus will be on how American artists are taught and nurtured. The PMA’s presentation will trace the evolution of American identity through visual culture. Together, they aim to offer a sweeping, inclusive view of American creativity—from celebrated icons to previously overlooked voices including women, immigrants, Indigenous artists, and self-taught creators.
“What makes American art so powerful is not only where it was made, but who made it—and why,” said Suda. “We couldn’t be happier to welcome the world to Philadelphia for this celebration.”
Adding a rare personal touch, John S. Middleton, majority owner of the Philadelphia Phillies, will share highlights from the Middleton Family Collection, one of the most significant private American art collections. These never-before-seen pieces will be integrated throughout both institutions, creating new contexts and perspectives.
“This exhibition is for everyone,” Middleton said. “Just like baseball, art has the power to bring people together and surprise us when we least expect it.”

Ministry of Awe: A Transformative Immersive Experience
Also debuting in 2026 is Ministry of Awe, an ambitious six-story art installation from renowned muralist Meg Saligman. Located in a historic 19th-century bank in Philadelphia’s Old City, this 8,500-square-foot interactive space will redefine how visitors experience art.
Described as a “living, walkable piece of art,” Ministry of Awe will immerse guests in multi-sensory storytelling through light, sound, live performances, and community-engaged installations. The former Manufacturer’s National Bank, designed by famed architect Frank Furness, adds a layer of historical richness to the project.
“We’re creating something deeply rooted in Philly’s history but designed to lift us into new realms of imagination,” said Saligman. “This isn’t a museum—it’s a moment of awe you can walk through.”
Art as a Way of Life in Philadelphia
Philadelphia’s cultural vibrancy is no accident—it’s the product of decades of public investment, civic pride, and a strong artistic community. The city boasts more than 4,000 murals through Mural Arts Philadelphia, the largest public art program of its kind in the U.S. A 1% public art ordinance ensures that creativity is embedded in the fabric of the city, from streetscapes to civic buildings.
“Art is part of our DNA in Philadelphia,” said Gregg Caren, President and CEO of PHLCVB. “Whether you’re in a museum, walking through our neighborhoods, or stepping into a reimagined space like Ministry of Awe, you’ll see that creativity is everywhere here.”
In addition to PMA and PAFA, visitors can explore nearby institutions like the Barnes Foundation, the Rodin Museum, and the eagerly awaited Calder Gardens (opening September 2025) along the scenic Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The city is also home to the mosaic wonderland Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens, and countless galleries featuring local and emerging artists.
Accessible and Welcoming to the World
Philadelphia’s accessibility makes it a natural gateway for international visitors traveling the East Coast. Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) offers nonstop service to over 120 cities worldwide and features convenient rail connections to the city center. Meanwhile, 30th Street Station provides seamless Amtrak links to New York City, Washington, D.C., Boston, and beyond.
With history in its heart and the future in its sights, Philadelphia promises a truly unforgettable experience for the United States’ 250th anniversary. Whether you’re an art lover, history buff, or simply seeking a city rich in culture and community, Philadelphia in 2026 is the place to be.
