Following the overwhelming success of Botero in China: Exhibition of Fernando Botero ­– the first ever retrospective of Fernando Botero’s works in China in 2016 – The Peninsula Shanghai brought back to the hotel two of his sculptures and paintings.

The Peninsula Shanghai brought back Fernando Botero back to Shanghai by exhibiting two of his most iconic bronze sculptures in high traffic Bund-side locations administered by the hotel. The Bird and Reclining Woman with Apple – Botero’s last monumental sculpture – are installed at secondary entrances to The Peninsula Hotel on The Bund and Yuanmingyuan Road, available for the enjoyment of both hotel patrons and the general public.

Two of key Botero paintings will also hold residence at The Lobby of No.1 Waitanyuan. The sculptures and paintings will be exhibited at The Peninsula Shanghai for a period of one year.

Fernando Botero was born in Medellín, Colombia, in 1932 and attended a matador school in his youth. He later studied art at Madrid’s Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. After his art began to achieve international acclaim in the 1970s, Botero moved to Paris. In the French capital, he began creating sculptures and later, the huge bronze figures that became his hallmark. In 2012, he received the Lifetime Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture award from the International Sculpture Centre. Today, his paintings and sculptures are exhibited around the world such as Park Avenue in New York City, the Champs-Élysées in Paris and Central Harbourfront in Hong Kong.
