PRIVATE PARADISE: INSIDE MPALA JENA’S EXCLUSIVE NEW VILLAS AT VICTORIA FALLS
This September, Great Plains, the iconic African eco-tourism company founded by National Geographic filmmakers Dereck and Beverly Joubert, unveiled the first of two brand-new, exclusive-use villas at Mpala Jena – a serene, wildlife-rich corner of the Zambezi River. The second villa is set to welcome guests in November 2025.

Known for its deeply immersive, conservation-driven experiences, Great Plains has once again raised the bar with Mpala Jena Private Villas, combining timeless elegance with untamed African beauty. These new villas are tailor-made for families or close-knit groups looking to reconnect with nature – and each other – in complete privacy.

A New Standard in Safari Seclusion
Each villa sleeps up to six adults, or four adults and three children, in three beautifully designed riverfront suites. The accommodation is fully serviced, complete with a dedicated private butler and a guide to accompany guests on bespoke adventures.
The villas sit in a secluded spot favored by zebras and impalas, who frequent the surrounding area for an afternoon drink. From here, sweeping views of the Zambezi unfold, with each villa positioned to overlook either a private waterhole or a quiet tributary that winds its way to the river.

Great Plains CEO Dereck Joubert describes the new offering as “exceptional residences that redefine both luxury and seclusion.” He explains, “Our guests are increasingly seeking longer, more immersive stays, where they can unwind in comfort and explore at their own pace. Mpala Jena Private Villas meet that need perfectly – offering everything from adrenaline-fueled activities near the Falls to deeply restorative moments on the riverbank.”

Where Mediterranean Aesthetics Meet African Soul
The architectural and interior design of Mpala Jena Private Villas is a triumph of understated elegance. Created by villa owners Kevin and Shannon Lang in collaboration with architect Julia Rotherford and award-winning designer Tracy Kelly, the villas blend Mediterranean influences with the soul of the African bush.

Drawing inspiration from the warm, sun-drenched style of Italy’s Puglia region, the villas feature steep thatched roofs, airy arches, and wide open living spaces that remain cool in the summer and cozy through the winter.

Interior designer Tracy Kelly shares her vision: “We wanted something rustic and authentic, but also simple and functional. Clean lines, a neutral palette, and natural materials bring calm and serenity, while soft greens and terracottas – inspired by African crafts – add warmth and cultural depth.”
Inside, guests will find textured rugs, linen sofas, tactile walls, and a seamless flow between indoor comfort and outdoor living. Every detail has been considered, from handcrafted furnishings to carefully curated art that honors the local heritage and wildlife.

Private Adventures and Unforgettable Moments
Guests staying at Mpala Jena Private Villas enjoy complete freedom to explore at their own pace – with no additional charge for their own private open safari vehicle and motorized boat. Whether you’re tracking elephants through the bush at dawn or gliding past hippos at sunset on a river cruise, every outing is entirely personalized.
