MEMMO ALFAMA, ONE OF LISBON’S HIDDEN TREASURES
Experience old-world Lisbon like a local in an 1800s neighborhood hotel offering unmatched views of the city and the Tagus River. Memmo Alfama Hotel is now open.
The hotel blends seamlessly into the surrounding buildings in perfect harmony with the neighborhood’s history. Madrid-based architect Samuel Torres de Carvalho—who also oversaw the restoration of sister property Memmo Baleeira—led the re-design of this 19th-century structure. The hotel’s crowning architectural highlight is its terrace, which offers panoramic views over the red rooftops of Lisbon.
The design team at Memmo Alfama put an emphasis on tactile and long-lasting materials.
An abundant use of wood and warm tones creates a soothing ambience that balances the authentic with the contemporary. With their high-quality linens, natural woods, and a rich sandy palette accented by cool grays, each room is a study in simple sophistication.
The 42 rooms of Memmo Aflama are all pleasingly simple in feel with muted colours, wooden floors, rustic woollen blankets and crisp-white cotton duvets. All bathrooms are shower-only, with micro-cement floors and Portuguese Saboaria soaps and shampoos. Rooms differ in size (the largest being the Mansard Junior Suite) and views, with the best – from Alfama Superior Rooms – overlooking Alfama and the Tagus River.
Showcasing the Portuguese kitchen, buffet breakfasts offer typical cakes and pastries such as pasteis de nata. The Wine Bar has a short menu of regional fare from croquettes of Portuguese ham to a fillet steak sandwich and cheese and smoked ham platters, accompanied by a good selection of Portuguese wines such as Alvarinho Soalheiro from Minho.
Double rooms from €150 (£128) in low season; and from €230 (£197) in high. Breakfast included. Free Wi-Fi.
