EXCITING NEW EXHIBITIONS AT THE SAN FRANCISCO MUSEUM OF MODERN ART
The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) is thrilled to announce an impressive lineup of exhibitions scheduled for this summer and fall, featuring renowned artists from around the world. These exhibitions will explore a diverse range of artistic expressions, with a particular focus on California artists and their connections to global audiences.

One of the highlighted exhibitions is “What Matters: A Proposition in Eight Rooms,” which draws inspiration from Yoko Ono’s Mend Piece. This thought-provoking showcase brings together contemporary artworks from SFMOMA’s collection, presenting artists’ responses to the question of “what matters?” These works delve into timely issues and explore the significance of artistic materials and human relationships.

In “Sitting on Chrome,” artists Rafa Esparza, Guadalupe Rosales, and Mario Ayala delve into the social dimensions and embodied experience of lowrider cruising. This exhibition, featuring paintings, sculptures, photographs, archival materials, and a sound installation, explores the vibrant culture and identities associated with this unique practice.
“Sea Change: Photographs from the Collection” examines how photography captures cultural, political, and environmental shifts over time. This exhibition presents a curated selection of works from SFMOMA’s collection, showcasing both historical and contemporary photography and highlighting recent acquisitions and underrecognized artists.
In Marshall Brown Projects: Dequindre Civic Academy, an installation of architectural drawings, models and collages reimagines the future of a neglected Detroit city block.

Two artists’ museum survey exhibitions arrive at SFMOMA this fall: the first showcasing the boldly colorful textiles, paintings and sculptures of Pacita Abad; the other taking an in-depth look at the celebrated work in photography, video and multimedia arts of Wolfgang Tillmans.
These exhibitions will be open to the public starting from July 22, 2023, and will continue throughout the fall season. SFMOMA invites visitors to experience the diverse spectrum of art on display and looks forward to welcoming art enthusiasts from all walks of life to engage with these captivating exhibitions.
