Taking over Forsthofgut Nature Hotel at just 22, Christoph Schmuck embraced both the weight of tradition and the freedom to innovate, guiding Forsthofgut from its origins in forestry and farming into a refined, experience-driven destination. Nestled in the alpine surroundings of Leogang, the hotel reflects a deep respect for its environment—where forests, mountains, and seasons are not just scenery, but integral elements of the guest experience.

Set within the pristine alpine landscape of Leogang, Forsthofgut Nature Hotel offers a refined yet deeply grounded retreat where nature shapes every aspect of the stay. The rooms and suites are designed as calm, contemporary sanctuaries, combining warm natural materials like wood and stone with expansive views of forests and mountains. Many feature private balconies or terraces that blur the line between indoors and outdoors, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in the surroundings. From cozy, minimalist spaces to spacious suites with panoramic vistas, each accommodation reflects a balance of alpine heritage and modern comfort, creating an atmosphere that feels both luxurious and authentically connected to the land.

In this conversation, Schmuck shares how legacy informs his vision, why success is measured in emotional impact rather than numbers, and how concepts like the waldSPA and holistic wellness redefine what it means to truly connect—with nature, with place, and with oneself.

You represent the fifth generation of your family at Forsthofgut—how has this legacy shaped your vision as a hotelier?
Growing up at Forsthofgut, hospitality was never a concept – it was a way of life. The connection to nature, to the land, and to people has been passed down through generations. I grew up understanding that hospitality is about sincerity, not staging. This legacy shaped my vision to create a place that feels genuine and grounded, where guests sense that everything has grown naturally over time. At the same time, it gave me the confidence to evolve the concept further, always with respect for what has been there before.

Taking over the property at just 22, what were the biggest challenges and defining moments in those early years?
Taking over at such a young age meant learning quickly and trusting my intuition. One of the biggest challenges was balancing respect for what had been built over generations with the courage to introduce new ideas. The defining moments were often those where decisions felt uncertain – but ultimately shaped the direction we took. Many of the paths we chose back then – especially focusing strongly on nature and experience – still define Forsthofgut today.

How did you navigate the transition from a traditional farm and forestry background to a leading nature-focused hotel?
The transition was actually quite organic. Our roots in forestry and farming gave us a deep understanding of nature – not as something romanticized, but as something real and alive. Instead of leaving that behind, we translated it into a hospitality concept. The forest, the seasons, the materials – all of that became part of the guest experience. In a way, the hotel is still what it always was: a place deeply connected to the land, just interpreted differently.

Over the past two decades, Forsthofgut has evolved significantly. How do you balance growth and expansion with maintaining authenticity and a personal, family-driven atmosphere?
Growth can easily dilute identity if it’s not guided carefully. For us, every development is questioned very consciously: does it deepen the experience or just add capacity? We have chosen to grow in a way that creates more space, more quality, more individuality – rather than more volume. At the same time, the family aspect remains visible and tangible, whether through personal encounters or the way the team lives the philosophy.

You’ve said success is not measured in numbers—how do you define success today?
Success is when guests leave with a feeling that stays. When they feel more connected, more grounded, more inspired. It’s about emotional value, not just economic value. Of course, numbers are part of running a business, but they are not what defines the meaning behind it.

Forsthofgut Nature Hotel is deeply rooted in nature—how do you translate this connection into the guest experience?
We don’t want guests to just see nature, we want them to feel it. Nature is not just a backdrop here, it is an active part of the experience. From architecture and materials to activities and wellness, everything is designed to bring guests closer to the forest, the mountains, and themselves.

What role does the surrounding alpine landscape of Leogang play in shaping the identity of the hotel?
The landscape defines everything, from the light to the seasons, from the activities to the mood. It gives rhythm to the year and creates a natural structure for the experiences we offer. Leogang is not just our location, it is part of our identity. Without this setting, Forsthofgut would not exist in the same way.

How do you ensure that every aspect of the property—from design to service—reflects your core values of sustainability and well-being?
It’s about consistency and intention. Every decision – whether in design, materials, cuisine or service – is guided by our values. Sustainability is not an add-on, it is embedded in how we think and act. We focus on long-term thinking, regional partnerships, conscious material choices and a way of working that respects both people and nature. It’s about consistency across all touchpoints.

How do you approach innovation while staying true to your alpine heritage?
Innovation for us means evolving naturally. We don’t follow trends for the sake of it, but look for ways to deepen the experience. That means taking what defines us – our alpine roots, our connection to nature – and developing it further in a contemporary way. The goal is always to enhance what already exists, not replace it.

The waldSPA has become a defining feature of the hotel—what was your vision when developing this concept?

The idea was to create a space where the forest is not outside, but part of the experience. A place of calm, regeneration and connection, where architecture and nature blend seamlessly.

How does the idea of a “forest spa” differ from more traditional wellness offerings?

Traditional wellness often happens in enclosed spaces. The forest spa, by contrast, is open, immersive and sensory. The surroundings are not decorative, they are part of the experience. This changes how guests feel, how they relax, and how deeply they regenerate.

Can you tell us about the evolution from waldSPA to waldSPA Health, and how health-focused wellness fits into your philosophy?

waldSPA Health is a natural extension of our philosophy. While waldSPA focuses on relaxation and regeneration, waldSPA Health adds a more analytical and preventive dimension. It combines diagnostics, therapies and personalized approaches with the calming environment of nature. For us, it’s about creating awareness and long-term wellbeing.

The Lake House Spa offers a unique lakeside experience—how does water play a role in your wellness concept?

Water has a very immediate effect on people – it calms, it grounds, it opens space. The lake creates a different atmosphere than the forest – more expansive, more reflective. This contrast is an important part of the overall experience.

What does a perfect wellness journey look like for a guest spending a few days at Forsthofgut?

There is no fixed path – and that is exactly the idea. A perfect stay is when guests find their own rhythm. Maybe they start with activity, then move into stillness. Maybe they explore, then retreat. The role of the hotel is to provide the space and the impulses, the rest happens naturally.

How do you ensure that growth does not come at the expense of the environment?

By making sustainability part of every decision. It’s not a separate project, but a continuous process. We ask ourselves not only what we build, but how and why we build it.

What role do guests play in supporting your sustainability efforts?
Guests are increasingly aware and engaged. Many appreciate conscious choices and contribute by valuing quality, regionality and sustainability. It becomes a shared mindset.

Which is your favorite travel memory?
The most meaningful memories are often the simplest. Moments together with Christina and the kids in nature, without distraction, where time feels different – far away from schedules. Those are the ones that stay.

Which is the hotel you will always go back to and why?
There are so many great hotels in the world I’ve had the chance to visit, so I can’t decide honestly. From my point of view places that feel genuine and personal. Where you feel the people behind it – not just the concept. Those are the places where I love to stay.
