Chicago has been named Best Big City in the US for the 9th time

More than 750,000 readers cast their votes in this year’s Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards, reaffirming what Chicagoans and frequent visitors already know: the city is a world-class destination defined by bold architecture, an unmatched culinary scene, a rich cultural tapestry, and an ever-welcoming spirit.

“This recognition comes from some of the world’s most experienced and discerning travelers,” said Kristen Reynolds, President and CEO of Choose Chicago, the city’s official tourism organization. “It affirms what we know to be true: Chicago is a world-class city with unmatched beauty, culture, and hospitality.”

The award also coincides with a record-breaking year for Chicago’s hospitality sector. Between June and August 2025, local hotels recorded 3.56 million rooms sold, up 4.3% from the previous year and surpassing pre-pandemic highs. Total hotel revenues reached $948 million, marking the strongest summer performance on record.

“Being named the Best Big City in the U.S. for the ninth consecutive year is an extraordinary honor—and one that feels more meaningful than ever,” Reynolds continued. “This distinction helps showcase the true spirit and vibrancy of our city to the world. It’s also a powerful driver for our tourism economy, which generates more than $20 billion annually and supports over 130,000 local jobs.”

A CITY WITH HEART AND RESILIENCE

Chicago’s enduring appeal, locals say, lies in its people. “This recognition is a testament to the people of Chicago—their welcoming spirit, creativity, and grit,” noted Mayor Brandon Johnson. “Our strength has always come from our residents, whose hard work and pride shine through in every neighborhood, restaurant, theater, and hotel.”

The city’s character was further recognized across the Atlantic. In the UK edition of the 2025 Condé Nast Traveller Readers’ Choice Awards, Chicago was named one of the friendliest cities in the world—the only U.S. city to receive that distinction.

Governor JB Pritzker echoed the sentiment with enthusiasm: “While critics try to paint Chicago as something to fear, the rest of the world knows the truth—this is the best big city in America. Chicago is a city of strength, resilience, and heart, powered by the people who welcome visitors from every corner of the globe with unmatched warmth and pride.”

BEYOND THE SKYLINE

Chicago’s winning formula is a combination of its cultural vibrancyarchitectural brilliance, and deep sense of community. From Millennium Park’s Cloud Gate and the Art Institute of Chicago to Broadway in Chicagoproductions and the iconic blues clubs that still pulse with rhythm, every corner offers a story worth exploring.

“Chicago’s cultural and culinary industries play a huge role in making the city a global destination,” said Sam Toia, President and CEO of the Illinois Restaurant Association. “Our chefs, servers, and restaurateurs are pushing boundaries in both cuisine and service. The city’s dining scene—from Michelin-starred establishments to hidden neighborhood gems—keeps people coming back year after year.”

Indeed, Chicago’s culinary landscape continues to be one of the strongest magnets for visitors. With an evolving mix of world-class fine dining, local favorites like deep-dish pizza and Italian beef, and a thriving international food scene, the city’s restaurants are a reflection of its diversity and creative energy.

“Your creativity and dedication make every stay, every event, every visit an experience that makes people want to come back again and again,” added Michael Jacobson, President and CEO of the Illinois Hotel and Lodging Association.

CELEBRATING CHICAGO’S SUCCESS

To mark this milestone, Choose Chicago has launched a citywide campaign inviting residents and visitors alike to celebrate under the hashtags #NeverOutdoneChi and #AllForTheLoveOfChicago. The organization has also released a feature highlighting “Nine Reasons Why Chicago Is the Best Big City in the U.S.,” spotlighting the very elements that make it irresistible—from its lakefront beauty to its festivals, from its world-class art to its sports legacy.

The recognition arrives at a moment of renewed optimism for the city’s travel and hospitality sectors. In 2024, Chicago welcomed 55.3 million visitors, generating $20.6 billion in economic impact. Events alone contributed more than $3 billion, thanks to the city’s robust infrastructure—from McCormick Place (North America’s largest convention center) to Navy PierUnited Center, and the city’s easily accessible airports.

But perhaps what truly sets Chicago apart is its soul—a rare blend of big-city energy and Midwestern warmth. Whether it’s the skyline mirrored on Lake Michigan, the scent of caramel popcorn on Michigan Avenue, or a crowd swaying to jazz in a neighborhood park, Chicago continues to prove that it’s not just a city to visit, but a city to feel.

As Mayor Johnson aptly put it: “Chicago truly is the best freaking city in the world—and now, once again, the world agrees.”

For travelers seeking culture, cuisine, creativity, and connection, Chicago remains the ultimate big-city experience—a destination that never stops reinventing itself while staying unmistakably, unapologetically Chicago.
