CELEBRITY APEX NAMING CEREMONY POSTPONED UNTIL LATER THIS YEAR
With the spread of the deadly coronavirus impacting the cruise industry Celebrity Cruises has made the difficult decision to delay the naming ceremony of Celebrity Apex. Even though the official ceremony is delayed the inaugural sailing events will go ahead as normal in the UK.
Celebrity Cruises Vice President and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo said:
“We are beyond excited about introducing Celebrity Apex at the end of March and, as it stands today, we plan to move forward with our two 2-night Inaugural Sailing events to celebrate her arrival into Southampton, the first ship Celebrity Cruises has launched in the UK in ten years.
“I believe the karma and energy around the naming of a ship and its godmother are important to its future, its guests and its crew. We have therefore made the difficult decision to postpone our formal naming ceremony until later this year and will name Celebrity Apex when she arrives in Fort Lauderdale to begin her Caribbean season. We continue to monitor global developments and are in constant consultation with global health authorities including the World Health Organization to abide by all protocols”.
The ship’s naming ceremony was originally set to take place on March 30 while the ship is in Southampton, UK. The godmother to Celebrity Apex is Reshma Saujani, CEO of Girls Who Code. The cruise line will announce the new date soon but has already stated it will be when the vessel is based out of Fort Lauderdale later in the year.
The second Edge-class vessel will begin with a 4-day preview cruise departing the British port on April 1 and including calls to Zeebrugge in Belgium and Amsterdam, Netherlands. The ship will be based out of Southampton for a series of Northern European sailings before repositioning for warmer waters in the Meditteranean in May 2020.
