“AFRICA FASHION” IGNITES THE FIELD MUSEUM CHICAGO WITH COLOR, CULTURE AND CREATIVITY
In a groundbreaking celebration of creativity, culture, and couture, Chicago’s Field Museum is currently hosting Africa Fashion, a vibrant and visually stunning exhibition that is captivating visitors from around the world. Presented in collaboration with the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London, Africa Fashion features a dazzling array of garments, textiles, photography, film, and music that together tell a bold, unfiltered story of African identity, resistance, and imagination. A FASHION REVOLUTION IN FABRIC AND FORM
At its heart, Africa Fashion is about much more than clothing. It’s about legacy, liberation, and living history. The exhibit begins during Africa’s mid-20th-century independence movements—when countries were breaking free from colonial rule—and charts a course through to contemporary streetwear and haute couture. It highlights how fashion was, and continues to be, a powerful means of expression, storytelling, and social commentary across the continent.
Christine Checinska, the V&A’s inaugural senior curator of African and diaspora textiles and fashion, leads the vision behind the exhibit. “We hope to tell a story that’s about agency, about abundance and about unbounded creativity,” Checinska said. “It’s what I see as the magnificence of African creativity.”
Twenty-two of Africa’s 54 nations are physically represented, with a cinematic installation showcasing fashion from each one. There’s even a 55th ensemble symbolizing pan-African identity and the African diaspora, connecting the continent to global fashion conversations.
The exhibition features the work of designers whose influence stretches across borders and generations—many of whom have dressed international celebrities, including Afrobeats stars and American first ladies. Each design is a testament to the diversity of Africa’s aesthetics, from bold patterns and vivid colors to minimalist tailoring and avant-garde silhouettes.
AN IMMERSIVE CULTURAL EXPERIENCE
More than just a visual feast, Africa Fashion engages all the senses. African music echoes throughout the exhibition, giving visitors a rhythm to walk to as they take in the textures and stories woven into each garment. Films, interviews, and behind-the-scenes glimpses into designers’ studios add personal dimension to the artistry on display.
“The fashions are as diverse as the continent itself,” Checinska explained. “There’s no single African aesthetic, and that’s what makes this exhibition so thrilling.”
Angelica London, exhibition project manager at the Field Museum, played a key role in bringing the show to life in Chicago. “You’re looking at beautiful things and looking at a culture of people who have created beautiful things, and not in a past-tense way. They’re still creating beautiful things,” she said.
Indeed, Africa Fashion actively challenges outdated narratives of African art as static or historical. Instead, it showcases a fashion scene that’s thriving, modern, and globally influential—evolving in real time while staying grounded in centuries of cultural tradition.

As London put it, “Africa is eons ahead of the United States when it comes to fashion. The silhouettes, the materials that are used are very different from what you’d find walking in downtown Chicago.”
