45 NOMINATIONS FOR BROADWAY COLLECTION SHOWS AT TONY AWARDS
Nine of the newest shows in The Broadway Collection have collectively garnered 45 nominations for the 77th Annual Tony Awards, set to air on June 16, 2024.hese awards honor theatre professionals for their outstanding achievements on stage.
Leading the pack is Hell’s Kitchen with 13 nominations, the most for any show in The Broadway Collection this year. Other nominated productions include The Outsiders, The Notebook, Suffs, Water for Elephants, Lempicka, The Who’s Tommy, Back to the Future: The Musical, and The Great Gatsby.
Hell’s Kitchen, a coming-of-age musical set in 1990s New York City, follows 17-year-old Ali and features the Grammy-winning music of Alicia Keys. It has earned nominations including Best Musical and Best Book. Brandon Victor Dixon and Maleah Joi Moon are nominated for Best Actor in a Featured Role and Best Actress, respectively.
The Outsiders, Suffs, and Water for Elephants also received nods for Best Musical and Best Book. Set in 1967 Oklahoma, The Outsiders reimagines the quest for purpose and the bonds of brotherhood, securing 12 nominations. Suffs, with six nominations, explores the women’s suffrage movement beginning in 1913, highlighting key figures and events in the fight for gender equality. Water for Elephants, set in a Depression-era circus, earned seven nominations for its portrayal of love and resilience under extraordinary circumstances.
Back to the Future: The Musical and Lempicka have been nominated for Best Scenic Design of a Musical, among other categories. Back to the Future: The Musical has two nominations, bringing Marty McFly and Doc Brown’s time-traveling adventures to the stage with special effects and witty dialogue. Lempicka, inspired by the life of Art Deco painter Tamara de Lempicka, received three nominations and features a pop-infused score.
With music and lyrics by Ingrid Michaelson, The Notebook has received three nominations for Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Book of a Musical. The Great Gatsby, set in the vibrant Roaring Twenties, earned a nomination for Best Costume Design by Linda Cho.
The Who’s Tommy received a nomination for Best Revival of a Musical. Adapted from The Who’s iconic rock album, the musical is known for its unforgettable music and thought-provoking narrative. The now-closed Here Lies Love, a disco-infused musical about Imelda and Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines, received four nominations.
